How Remote Online Notarization Works
Remote Online Notarization (RON) modernizes the traditional notarization process, allowing documents to be notarized in an electronic format without the physical presence of the signer. Here’s how it typically works:
Document Upload: The individual requiring notarization uploads the document to a secure platform that offers RON services.
Identity Verification: The signer’s identity is verified through a multi-step process. This may include answering knowledge-based authentication questions (KBA), presenting a government-issued ID for visual inspection through a webcam, and possibly biometric verification.
Video Conferencing: Once identity verification is complete, the signer and the notary public connect via a live video call. This step is crucial as it simulates the in-person aspect of traditional notarization, ensuring the signer is executing the document of their own free will and understanding.
Document Signing and Notarization: During the video call, the signer electronically signs the document, and the notary public, after witnessing the signing, applies an electronic notarization seal or stamp and digital certificate. This step often involves the use of digital signature technology for added security.
Record Keeping: A recording of the video conference, along with a log of the notarization process, is securely stored. This serves as a record of the transaction and may be required by law.
Electronic Delivery: The notarized document is then made available for download or sent electronically to the necessary parties.
FAQ
How Can you Notarize Online?
An online notary is someone who is a certified notary public that meets with someone using video conferencing technology to get documents notarized. Even though you are still going to go through the same steps as you would with a physical notary public, all of this is going to be done using the computer. That way, you don’t have to worry about driving from place to place trying to find a physical notary. You also don’t have to worry about setting up an appointment, waiting in line, or getting disappointed if you can’t find someone.
